The Csongrád County Archives Szentes Archive belongs to those few archives of the county that function where its guarded documents were originate in, in Kossuth square the main sqare in Szentes, among the archaic walls of the old County Hall. Here are kept the originated documents of the former Csongrád county between 1723 and 1950: the minits of the meeting of the Noble General Assembly and the Municipal Boards, albums, charters and records of the nobility, juridical and judiciary documents, the materials of county hall senior civil servants, the sheriff of the county and the Lord Lieutenant, rate collectors etc. and the documents of Parliamentary elections. Here we find the documents of the former districts of county and their villages (Szegvár, Mindszent, Nagymágocs, Derekegyház, Fábiánsebestyén, Csongrád, Felgyõ and Tömörkény) and the documents of historical value of Szentes which originate from 1703. The archaical collections contain the old register of births from 1741, the handwritten maps of the county and the town, the period designes of the most important public buildings, and the photo- and poster collection of several thousand pieces. In 1884 the earliest documents were placed in store-rooms originally planned to be the archive of the County Hall, which had just been completed. Along the growth of number of materials the institute gained other rooms, where the invaluable sources of history are treated by modern, up to date technology. Even today the size of our collection is increasing; materials of the local governments of the town and villages arrive as well as documents of historical value of different authorities, economic and cultural organizations. The size of the material registered in Szentes is 3590 running-metre.

Co-workers of our archive have always been in personal connection with the organizations producing the documents. From the 1970's we have observed the fates of originated documents at several firms and helped to develop the most suitable document management and the archival order.

We render professional help to develop and operate filing cabinets of the ventures which revolve to us.We observe the documents of the liquidating firms and look after the preservation of documents of historical value for posterity. In order to give information of better quality quicker to both researchers and those who get in touch with us we were among the first ones who started computer register the documents in the archive in 1984. This program has been going on and growing in the contents ever since.

On the ground floor corridor of the County Hall a permanent exhibition can be seen containing a collection from the original materials of the archive and has been stamping place of the ½Regions, Ages, Museums½ since 1988.

The documents seen here recall the most important events of our town and county from the eighteenth century to 1956. In order to get people acquianted with our past our collaborators have been actively participating in historical documentary writing essays and articles, lectoring, directing exhibitions and editing various volumes for decades. Primary and secondary school teachers regularly give extra or extraordinary lessons in the archive. Besides people who are engaged in historical research dozens of collage students visit us year to year who can only write their thesises with the help of our original sources. Our technical library, which is outstanding our town with its 12000 volumes, is used by a lot of peeople as well as our press collection, in which all the local newspapers either in the original or in microfilms can be found.
