Szentes lies in the Great Hungarian Plain, in the northern part of Csongrád County, on the left bank of the River Tisza, and on both sides of the River Kurca, which winds its way eleven kilometres long through the town. The town's other natural waters include two brooklets: Veker and Kórógy; and the town has an artificial pond of a size of 122 hectares, called Lake Termál.

The settlement is 78.5 - 85 metres above sea-level; a famously flat region.

The sedimented soil is predominant in the area, although other types such as black hard soil, yellow soil and sodic patches are typical as well. As a result of the continental climate of the area, the summer is hot, the autumn is long and warm, and the winter is mild. Szentes is one of the sunniest areas of the country; the annual average of sunny hours is 2,100.

It is a traditionally good grain-producing area with a particularly developed horticulture. The town with its neighbourhood is known for its quality vegetable production all over the world. Its effectiveness has been greatly increased by the climate and the various uses of ample thermal water. Szentes and its vicinity is the densest geotermic field of Europe; currently 32 thermal wells are functioning in its administrative area.

The present area of the town is 35,300 hectare. The number of its inhabitants is 32,965, so it is the third largest town in the country.

Highways 45 and 451 go through its land. The town can be reached from any point of the country by train or bus. Every day three through trains and five buses leave Szentes for Budapest, which is 137 kilometers far away.
